The concentration of creative minds in the same few zip codesThe concentration of creative minds in the same few zip codes—people boldly forging their own paths across disciplines—has also created the space for first- and second-generation immigrants to build fragrance brands on their own terms, making room for unconventional ideas, identities, and perspectives. Take The New Savant: The six-year-old brand based in Gowanus infuses its candles with whimsy and complexity, crafting scent profiles that push back against the fragrance industry's tendency towards Eurocentrism and heteronormativity. — Read more in How Brooklyn Became an Incubator for Wildly Imaginative Indie Perfume Brands at Condé Nast Traveler.

Friday scent of the day 7/17It’s Friday, plus, World Emoji Day, World Day for International Justice and David Hasselhoff’s birthday. Our community project for today is Decades Friday...name a favorite decade, and wear a fragrance to fit your choice. (This has been suggested by multiple people, and is possibly a repeat.) Today I’m doing a corrective: I’m wearing an Olivia Giacobetti fragrance from 1993, L’Eau de L’Artisan, even though I’m pretty sure I would not have appreciated it at the time...
